Latvia Tournament Concludes with Thrilling Semifinals and Final
The 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia, concluded on Monday with Spain and Puerto Rico securing the final two spots in the men's basketball tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Spain, the reigning world champions, defeated Turkey 86-77 in a hard-fought semifinal, while Puerto Rico upset the highly-favored United States 96-89 in a stunning upset.
In the championship game, Spain proved too strong for Puerto Rico, winning 98-86. Sergio Rodriguez led the way for Spain with 24 points, while Ricky Rubio added 17 points and 10 assists.
The other two teams to qualify for the Olympics, Greece and Brazil, had already secured their spots in the tournament with victories in the quarterfinals.
The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11. The men's basketball tournament will feature 12 teams, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals.
The addition of Spain and Puerto Rico to the Olympic field makes the tournament even more competitive. Both teams have a history of success on the international stage, and they will be looking to make a strong run for a medal in Paris.
