A coordinate system is the cornerstone of 3D modeling. It provides a systematic way of describing the position of points and objects in three-dimensional space. Without a coordinate system, it would be impossible to create accurate and consistent models.

At the core of a coordinate system lies the concept of assigning numbers to points. In two dimensions, this involves using a pair of numbers (x, y) to represent the horizontal and vertical positions, respectively. In three dimensions, a third number (z) is added to represent depth.

The base reference system for a 3D model is typically the "world" coordinate system. All other coordinates within the model are relative to this system.

Additional Techniques

Beyond these core concepts, there are various techniques that can enhance the functionality of coordinate systems in 3D modeling:

  • 3-Vectors: In 3D, points and vectors are represented as 3-vectors with three components (x, y, z).
  • 3 x 3 Matrices: Transformations (e.g., rotations, translations) are performed using 3 x 3 matrices.
  • Frames: Frames are local coordinate systems that are attached to objects in the scene. They simplify the process of manipulating and animating objects.
